Most of the services you see on TV only work in limited circumstances. For every one that gets some relief there are 50 that get none. There are a number of steps that can be taken to put off payments but those to eliminate paying the IRS are difficult to accomplish. Communication with the IRS is helpful. The more they understand that you can’t pay the less they will attempt to make you pay. It will be helpful if you get some one to assist you with the paperwork.

A compromise and settle may be available to you, but you should seek the services of a local "Enrolled Agent" to assist you.

Generally, the places that advertise to "settle your tax debt" tend to be very huge ripoffs. They over promise, over charge and then under deliver. Their fees can run in to the thousands of dollars and they are no better at getting a settlement offer accepted than anyone else.
Contact a CPA or EA in your local area and find one that has collections experience and explain your situation.

You might be eligible for an offer in compromise that might significantly reduce what you owe, or for having your account put into deferred status. But use a local Enrolled Agent, NOT one of the ripoff firms that advertises on TV.

how much do you owe, what is a lot of money?
Are you sure you owe? Did you file your returns? Or did IRS send you ASFR notice showing if they file returns for you then you will owe. If you do actually owe IRS you can contact them at 1-800-829-7650 and work out a payment plan, IRS will work with you, IRS will even put your account in currently not collectible if you don’t have any money at all. Download Form 433-F from the IRS website http://www.irs.gov and complete the form and have it available when you call IRS. Don’t Ignore IRS, and don’t hire no one to do it for you, you can do it all yourself, or visit IRS local office in your city for assistance.
